Sulfur tetrafluoride is a selective organic fluorinating agent. In its molecular structure, S atoms form σ bonds with sp3d hybrid orbitals. The molecular shape is a deformed tetrahedron. It is colorless at normal temperature and pressure, with a similar sulfur dioxide gas It is a gas with a strong irritating odor, which is poisonous and does not burn or explode in air; it is still stable at 600°C. It is strongly hydrolyzed in the air and emits white smoke. Encountering an environment with moisture will cause corrosion similar to hydrofluoric acid. Completely hydrolyzed into sulfur dioxide and hydrofluoric acid, partially hydrolyzed to produce toxic thionyl fluoride, but can be fully absorbed by strong alkali solution and become non-toxic and harmless salts; soluble in benzene.
