Introduction to propane gas

Propane, an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3CH2CH3, is a colorless and odorless gas, slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol and ether, with stable chemical properties and not easy to react chemically. It is often used as a refrigerant, internal combustion engine fuel or organic synthesis.

Properties of propane gas

It is easy to form solid hydrates with water at low temperatures, causing blockage of natural gas pipelines. Propane reacts with excess chlorine at higher temperatures to produce carbon tetrachloride and tetrachloroethylene CI2C=CCI2; it reacts with nitric acid in the gas phase to produce 1-nitropropane

a mixture of nitropropane (CH3) 2CHNO2, nitroethane CH3CH2NO2 and nitromethane CH3NO2.

Uses of propane gas

1. The biggest use of propane is to make liquefied petroleum gas with butane, mainly as fuel.

2. Propane is an important raw material for cracking ethylene.

3. The technology of catalytic dehydrogenation of propane to produce propylene has been industrialized.

4. Propane gas phase nitration produces mixed nitro compounds: 1-nitropropane and 2-nitropropane, nitroethane and nitromethane. Nitropropane is a good solvent for vinyl and epoxy resins. Nitromethane is used as a fuel filler for racing cars.

5. Propane can be oxidized to produce propylene oxide, with methanol, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetic acid as by-products.
