Dimethyl ether DME has a wide range of applications, including solvents, aerosols, foaming agents, extractants, etc. High purity dimethyl ether can also be used as an anesthetic. When used as a fine chemical product, it can replace traditional chlorofluorocarbons as environmentally friendly propellants. The solubility of dimethyl ether is similar to that of chlorofluorocarbons, except for aerosols such as dimethyl ether, propane, butane, and propane butane. More and more aerosol manufacturers are gradually using dimethyl ether as the propellant for aerosols.

Dimethyl ether DME properties

It is a colorless and odorless inert gas.

Molecular formula: CH3OCH3

Molecular weight: 46.07

Boiling point:- 24.9℃

Explosion limit: 3.4~18%

Spontaneous combustion point: 350 ℃

Combustion heat: 6900kcal/kg

Flash point:- 41℃

Viscosity: 0.0102CP (20 ℃)

Using a certain solvent enhancer, such as 6% alcohol, dimethyl ether and water can be miscible in any ratio. Once its KB value is 60, it has perfect solubility. Can work with LPG CFCS、 Alcohols, ketones, ethers, etc. are miscible.

Application of dimethyl ether DME

1. Insecticidal spray

DME is widely used in insecticide sprays. Dissolvable in water, using a water-based formula of dimethyl ether can create a comfortable environment.

2. Indoor air freshener

The strong solubility of dimethyl ether DME allows it to dissolve up to 30% in water. Adding more than 6% alcohol can reach the limit of mutual solubility with water in any proportion. Some emulsifiers are used to emulsify essence into alcohol, and then the water phase forms a stable single-phase.

3. Hair gel

On the one hand, propane is the propellant gas used, which leads to the emission of highly volatile organic compounds. On the other hand, high concentrations of alcohol may damage hair, leading to hair breakage and splitting. Therefore, formula technicians began to develop alcohol free or low alcohol hair gels. Due to its perfect dilution, dimethyl ether DME quickly became the primary alternative propellant gas used in hair gel products.

4. Spray painting

There are some drawbacks to using propellant gases with lower dilution, such as butane and fluorocarbons. Foam may be produced during use. This may lead to poor paint surface.

The application in the spray painting industry not only solves the above-mentioned shortcomings, but also forms a perfect spraying effect, with fine and uniform droplets and moderate spraying force.
